Consulting in water-based growing techniques

Recirculating water in growing systems such as hydroponics and aquaponics can use up to 90% less water, compared to growing in traditional soil.

Hydroponics

Fruit and vegetables are grown with their roots in a water-based nutrient solution, instead of soil. There are many different types of hydroponic systems and techniques. Indoors, lights and climate controls are used to stimulate growth and increase crop yields.

hydroponics

A simple 'wick' window-sill system growing lettuce in a nutrient solution with low energy costs.

VerticalHydroponics

Industrial scale indoor vertical hydroponics, optimizes the indoor space and allows crops to be grown all year round. More equipment is needed with higher energy costs.

WaterChemistry

Understanding the nutrient solution chemistry, pH and EC values, specific plant life-cycle and their nutrient needs, lead to increased crop yields. Knowledge of the equipment needed, dimensioning, lighting and market are also vital to a successful solution.

Aquaponics

A recirculating system where both fruit, vegetables, flowers and fish are grown at the same time. Water is pumped from the fish tank via a bio-filter to the plants and then back to the fish tank. Bacteria in the bio-filter turn the fish waste to nutrients that the plants take-up, thus cleaning the water that is returned to the fish tank.

aquaponics

A simple aquaponic system with gold fish and lettuce.

aquaponicsFish

As with all fish farming, understanding the specific fish species, water parameters, equipment, laws and regulations are essential.

aquaponicsDim

Dimensioning and planning the system along with understanding the equipment needed, the energy costs and sources, climate, overall costs and goals are vital to a successful aquaponic system.

Sea Farming

Farming the sea is similar to agriculture. Different growing techniques are used to grow many different types of species such as seaweeds, shellfish and fish. The nutrients in the sea water are utilized. As with all outdoor farming it is weather and environment dependant.

seafarming

Seaweed farming, farm installation, seeding and harvesting.

musselfarming

Mussel farming, setting out bands for mussels to grow on.

Fishfarming

Fish farming in the sea. In recent years indoor land-based fish farming is on the increase, where the climate, water parameters and environment can be controlled.

About

Growing up in Ireland, I was surrounded by traditional farming and fishing. As the demand to find sustainable food sources grows, fish & sea farming and growing in-doors without soil really started to interest me.
Using new techniques and technology to grow new products and extend the growing season in-doors is an exciting area. After studying and starting to understand these techniques, I now help other individuals, hobbyist, groups and businesses with these solutions and help grow their business.

Education:

Bachelor of Science.
Diploma - Aquaponic Engineering.
Diploma - Fish/Shellfish farmer and Aquaculturist.
